One in a series of K-only digital posters for various events in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 11 × 17in.

Cover side of the program handout for the 2013 Department of Political Science Student Research Symposium and Awards Ceremony.

One upside to being the committee chair for a graduation convocation is that no one argues when you say you're going to design the program. 6 × 8in, tri-folded.

Invitation card to political science alumni for the department's annual Politics for Lunch lecture in Chicago, IL.

Invite for the political science department's pending open house to celebrate its new campus location. 9.71 × 6in.

Various holiday cards. (Anything with dogs on it was a personal project.) Various formats.

Informational brochure and applications for the Common Ground Food Co-operative's Food for All Program offering discounted prices and equity to eligible families. I did the logo/wordmark as well. 5.5 × 11in folded.

Personal project. I've been reading the NYRB for over twenty years, and I have never liked their covers; the magazine is so smart and their covers look they were pasted up in 15 minutes. I get tradition and all that, and perhaps they don't want the magazine to look slick. But still. 10.75 × 14.75in.

Brochure for a series of career preparation workshops for political science majors. 8.5 × 5.5in, folded.

Maybe the last program I'll do for APT—but in academics, you never know. Talk about a great place to throw a conference. And I was happy that people seemed to agree that an accordion-folded program was not a bad idea. 6 × 11in folded.

Personal project; book covers. I first encountered Dürrenmatt's writings by way of his play Die Physiker (The Physicists), given to me by a neighbor when I went to Bonn, (then West) Germany in 1985 as an exchange student. Dürrenmatt is one of the slyest commentators on the human condition you'll ever read. If you read only one piece of his, make it Der Besuch der Alten Dame (usually translated The Visit). 6 × 9in.

The first outdoor Pecha-Kucha in Champaign-Urbana. And there was only just a little rain. 12 × 18in.

One-color screenprint sold as a fundraiser for the Champaign-Urbana Design Organization. Part of the abCU series; volunteers each chose one glyph to depict with an assigned color and common format. 11 × 14in.

One of a series of conference programs I made for the Association for Political Theory. This one I designed while also serving as one of the program committee co-chairs. The downside was that I was designing and getting this produced remotely—I was in Champaign, IL, and the conference was in College Station, TX—while also putting together a conference program with over one hundred papers and presenters, panel chairs and discussants, and plenary speakers, with all the attendant headaches about venues, dropouts, late papers, and so on. The upside was that I didn't have to wait long for updates and changes that needed making. 7.3 × 9.5in, folded.

Personal project. Crick's In Defence of Politics is still the bible for me when it comes to explaining what politics is (or should be), and I've always thought that his publishers (formerly Penguin, now Continuum) never really gave the book the treatment it deserves.

This was one of my earliest attempts to design a book, in a fashion I suppose you might call (following Robin Kinross's coinage) 'modern traditionalist'. Today I think I'd give it a more self-consciously modern treatment, and if I ever find the free time I might just do that.
I started out as a self-trained graphic designer; I began to study typography and information design on my own as I was completing my PhD in political theory from Indiana University. I've worked as a solo freelancer and in partnership with my wife, Miriam Martincic, with clients in the commercial, co-operative, non-profit, and academic worlds.

I'm presently a full-time student in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's graphic design MFA program. This constrains my ability to take on new clients, but if you're really interested in hiring me, please get in touch. (The worst I can say is that I can't do it, right?)
